Taco Bell- You're on my shit list!

Photobucket

For those of you that are on my Facebook, you may have seen my huge rant about Taco Bell on August 15th. I've decided to spread this story on the internet a little bit further with our blog.

As far as "fast food" goes, Taco Bell was the best choice vegans had in the area. Once they added the Fresco option (a zesty salsa with no cheese automatically), it made ordering food much easier and should even promote a lower chance of your order being screwed up. I mean, ordering something with no meat, and sub beans off the Fresco style menu should be pretty easy. Right? WRONG! (We learned their lingo for ordering just to make it easier for them to understand what we wanted)

Several times we've ordered food, but once we looked at the "food" there would inevitably be cheese and/or meat on it. I've sent several emails to corporate, talked to a local manager, and I have even called and emailed to compliment them for going a period of time of having my order correct. In our local store there is one employee, Bobby, who knows his business, and is damn good at it! When I've seen Bobby making our food, I've felt relieved. He's just that good. I've sent emails letting them know how good he is! I don't mind giving compliments when they are deserved, and I don't mind complaining when I pay for something and end up with dead animals in my food.

So why go to these restaurants you may ask? Why should I not? If an omnivore ordered a burger, would they expect to get horse, cat, or dog meat in it? No! I pay the same just as everyone else. If they are going to have the options for me to be able to eat there, I'd like to take advantage of it! In a capitalist economy, the dollar is the almighty vote, and if I can put my votes towards vegan options, I'm going to do it!

So on the 15th, Jim picked up our favorite items from Taco Bell and brought it home. We pulled out our "sour cream" and Daiya cheese and slather it on. Jim takes a bite of his taco, and all is well. I take a bite, and taste meat. Ok, yeah I should have checked it more thoroughly before I took a bite, but how hard is it for people to read and follow directions? Is that too much to ask?

So after the crying and vomiting, we get back in the car, drive another half an hour back to Taco Bell, walk in and ask for a manager. A man comes to the counter and Jim politely said, "We ordered this Fresco with no meat, and there is meat in there." The man asked if we ordered it through drive through or came into the store, turns around and walks away with the receipt (which was correct). He comes back with a full refund and starts to turn and walk away. No apologies, nothing. I politely said, "Excuse me, this has happened several times, who can I talk to about this?" I was not a bitch about it, as much as I really wanted to be, but what would that do other than make us look like assholes? So many people have this idea that vegans are automatically holier than thou snobbish people, and I don't want to portray that. I simply wanted to see who I needed to talk to about having a "vegan" menu, even if it was just a couple of things that they are already making without having to sub this, remove that. There are other taco places that do it, why can't a nationally recognized chain do the same?

So I digress, when I asked the "manager" of the day who I could talk to, he said "I don't know. I don't have a number for corporate." and started to walk away again. I am really starting to get pissed off at this point. What kind of manager or fill in manager doesn't have the number to their corporate headquarters? Especially when it's 1-800-Taco-Bell!!! Then the sarcasm in me came out, I said, "You don't know the phone number to your own corporate headquarters?" He said no, and I got my Chester Cat grin, laughed, and walked out. Douche bag.

I get back home and call corporate headquarters, explained what happened, and told her I wanted to talk about offering a "vegan" taco or burrito. They can do it already, why not just make a name for it and there ya go? So she pretty well much ignores the vegan menu option idea and start apologizing for the dead cow in my taco.

Now, I'm a manager for a multi-million dollar company, so I even approached it from a revenue side. Every time they put that crap in my food, it's wasted money because they have to make a new one, and for me, it's a needlessly dead cow. She apologized for the man in the local store refusing to give me the corporate number, and ensures me I'll get a phone call back within 3 to 5 days. Still no call back, and they won't. They've not responded to the last several emails or phone calls I've made, not even the compliments.

Taco Bell will not receive one penny more from me, not a single cent. I will not recommend them to anyone any longer. I've sent them plenty of business. I can't tell you how many vegetarian/vegans I've explained what they can get there that would be safe for them to eat. I'm very aware that only 3% of the American population is vegetarian, and only 1% of that are vegans. (There is a quickly growing population of vegans in my area though!) I know I will not make Taco Bell go broke, and even if every vegetarian/vegan in the country boycotted them, it wouldn't do much harm. One thing that can hurt them is their lousy customer service and management staff.

And just because I've been a good girl through most of this blog with pulling out my favorite word (check it, I haven't used it once!!)---- FUCK YOU TACO BELL!

Period.

Well almost, Jim says, "Dammit Taco Bell, I loved you so.... how could you do this to me."

Puccini's- Cumberland, MD

Located just east of Cumberland on exit 46 off of Interstate 68, Puccini's is a nationally registered historic site. The 1818 Hinkle House served as a civil war hospital during the battle at Folck's Mill. They have a wood fired pizza oven, which I'm sure we'll go back at some future point to try a veggie pizza if they've changed their dough recipe from the previous owners who included honey in it. The decor was interesting with several historic pictures and articles hanging from the walls, and a gorgeous fireplace in every room!

Puccini's full menu is available here.

For those of you who know me, I'm not a veggie lover, as a matter of fact, most of the time that I get a good dose of veggies is when Jim is sneaking them into my soups, beans, and pasta. I was planning on another spaghetti day, but that wasn't my fate for the day. I'm glad :)

When we arrived, we asked we asked our server, Anthony, about the part and parcel in their pasta. He wasn't quite sure so he brought back the actual bag and let us look at the ingredients list. Eggs... bleached flour... No pasta for me!!! At this point I look at Jim and shrug, I guess I'm going for a veggie wrap.

Photobucket

I was amazingly surprised, and wolfed this bad boy down!! All the veggies that I've never liked wrapped up in a vegan dream; Red peppers, green peppers, onion, squash, and zucchini. I will go back and order this again! If all my veggies tasted like this, I would most definitely order and eat them more often!

Jim ordered the Portabella wrap with portabella mushrooms, fire roasted red peppers, balsamic vinaigrette (which he thought had a bit much and will probably ask them to go lightly on when he orders it in the future). They came with home made chips, which he wasn't thrilled with, but is willing to try again.

mushroom wrap

Quality of Food:
Veggie Wrap: Super Stellar!
French Fries: Meh...you can't really screw up french fries can you, or can you?
Portabella Wrap: Meh, but Stellar with 75% less vinaigrette!
Home-made chips: Sucks!
Willingness to Accommodate: Stellar! Kudos to Anthony for bringing us the bag of pasta to check out the ingredients list!
Overall Experience: Stellar!

The total of the meals with two sodas was $21.02, plus the tip Anthony absolutely deserved ;)

Wish You Were Here- Lancaster, PA

Last Sunday we took a trip into Pennsylvania's dairy heartland with our good friend, author Frank Bittinger. A quick Google search offered a promising place to get our grub on. A restaurant that advertises that they make vegan sausage and cupcakes?? Mmmm...Get in my belly!

Located at 108 West Orange Street in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Wish You Were Here was a special delight! The staff was extremely friendly and more than helpful with explaining what options we had available, and they are willing to substitute vegan options in their non-vegan dishes. It's so nice to go a restaurant that knows and understands veganism's dietary requirements. It doesn't happen much around here!

Wish You Were Here Menu.

Jim ordered the Peasant Omlet with tofu scramble substituted for egg and without the cheddar cheese. He received a side of home fries and molasses toast with vegan butter.

Peasant Omlet

Jodi ordered 2 Swede pancakes which are made with organic rolled oats and served with banana slices and apple sauce. Also pictured is their amazing home fries and kick ass vegan sausage!

Oatmeal pancakes

After munching down and stuffing our guts on one of the most amazing breakfasts we've had in a long time, a peak into the baked goods became a double belly stuffer as they offered blueberry and banana walnut muffins as well as chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing, which is pictured below. Frank purchased the rest of the day's stock of vegan baked goodness and we were off on our way fully satisfied.

Chocolate cupcake

Special thanks to Frank who bought us our breakfast, which was about $10 per person. The baked goods were fairly priced as well, with the muffins costing $2.50 each and the cupcakes were $2.95 a piece.

Quality of Food:
Peasant Omlet: Stellar!
Swede Pancakes: Stellar!
Home Fries:Stellar!
Vegan Sausage: Super Stellar!
Willingness to Accommodate: Super Stellar!
Overall Experience: Stellar!

As a matter of fact we are considering taking a day to drive the 3 hours from the Cumberland, MD tri-state area to Lancaster again. A day of shopping and good food? Sure! Why not?

We'd also like to take this opportunity to offer a couple of extra non-food related plugs associated to the day....

Frank Bittinger is the fellow vegan and author of Into the Mirror Black, Angels of the Seventh Dawn, and Angels of the Mourning Light. Frank donates his proceeds to several animal rescues and no kill shelters. He is also in the middle of sponsoring a book drive for our military members in Iraq and Afghanistan who have asked him to send copies of his books to the war zones. Check out his website, www.frankebittinger.com to read up on Frank or donate to his book drive.

The purpose of our trip was to accompany Frank as he adopted a couple of birds from Lair of Dragons Bird Rescue. His new companion birds are Rocky, a macaw, and Pee Wee, a cockatiel. This bird rescue was amazing, and the owners put a lot of hard work and dedication into helping save the lives of many birds. Frank has also blogged about his experience at the rescue, which you can read on Frank's Blog.

Please check out the Lair of Dragon Bird Rescue if you are considering adopting a bird or would like to make a donation to a good cause!

Grand China Buffet, Lavale, MD

While we must admit that there are several options on any Chinese buffets.. the usual Veggie Lo Mein, Veggie Fried Rice, fried potatoes, string beans, and spring rolls, we wanted to highlight the Grand China Buffet. Located at 1230 National Highway, Lavale, MD 21502, you find the full menu, hours of operation, and directions at http://www.queencitymenu.com/grandchina.htm.

The reason we like this restaurant in comparison is due to Jim's hankering for Sushi. Several restaurants have vegan friendly rolls on occasion; however, at the Grand China Buffet, they are willing to prepare a custom roll for you- unheard of at any buffet that we've ever been to. You can watch the staff as they prepare your sushi roll. Jim's favorite includes: Avocado, cucumber, tofu, and rice. The portion is ample, and is included with the price of the buffet. The price does vary by day and time so check out the website for more information.

Here's a pic of their sushi roll, grilled veggies, and seaweed salad. They even put a little artistic flair to it. Can you see the dragon?

The biggest problem you may experience is the language barrier. The Sushi chef's some times do not speak English so you may need to grab one of the other employees to translate.

Sand Springs, Frostburg, MD

Located at 188 W Main St., Frostburg, MD Sand Springs Saloon has very little in the way of vegan eats; however, the veggie burger is pretty good! The bar section is pretty nice and has several televisions set up for sports enthusiasts.

Jodi ordered the garden burger minus the honey mustard and fries. This is one of the best veggie burgers in the area.

Photobucket

Jim wanted to check out Sand Spring's willingness to accommodate so he requested a Gyro (a pita wrap that usually includes lamb) with the garden burger as a substitute. The Gyro also comes with a cucumber sauce, which has sour cream, so he substituted the cucumber sauce with Italian dressing.

For fans of sweet potato fries, these are a must try. Topped with cinnamon and brown sugar, save them for last because they function well as a desert :)

The total cost of this vegan eat (including one sweet tea and one Killian's draft): $19.66!

Quality of Food:
Garden Burger: Stellar!
Veggie Gyro: Stellar!
Sweet Potato Fries:Stellar!
Willingness to Accommodate: Stellar!
Overall Experience: Stellar! (Except for Michael Vick on the t.v... Asshole!)

Castiglia's, Keyser, WV

Located on 401 S Mineral St, Keyser, WV 26726, click HERE for yahoo maps and directions.

"Oh my belly!!", is what we always say before we even get up from the table. This place is a little out of our way, but we hit it up every chance we get! Jerry Castiglia came from northern Italy to the VA area and opened his first restaurant in Front Royal. After a few years he expanded his business and came to Keyser. All of their bread/dough's and sauces are authentic home made Italian goodness! They are currently expanding on the inside, and remodeling with some fantastic stone work.

Castiglia's breadstix

The Spaghetti comes with a side salad, but they will let you substitute for breadsticks instead. These breadsticks are the best in the area. The home made dough is deep fried, and probably not healthy but damn it's good!! They do come with Parmesan cheese on them, and the sauce has Parm on it too, but requesting it without can easily be granted.

Castiglia's Marinara

You better be starving when you walk in that door! These portions are freakin huge! Jodi usually eats left overs for two days. The Marinara sauce is home made and just a little sweet. It's good!

Castiglia's Veggie Stromboli

Jim only eats one breadstick in order to save room for the feast that's on its way. This is a small Stromboli (even though it's a foot long) is ordered without meat or cheese. They threw in some extra veggies, such as broccoli, spinach, and tomatoes. Also inside were mushrooms, peppers, onions, and black olives.

Other options available include a veggie sub, eggplant Parmesan (of course minus the parm), an eggplant sub, and your token fries or salad. Beer and wine are available.

The total cost of this delicious vegan eat (including one soda and a Heineken): $18.77!

Quality of Food:
Bread Sticks: Stellar!
Veggie Stromboli: Stellar!
Spaghetti Marinara:Stellar!
Willingness to Accommodate: Stellar!
Overall Experience: Stellar!

Denny's, Lavale, MD

Located at 1239 National Highway, Lavale, MD 21502, you can find Denny's menu at http://www.dennys.com/en/. Click HERE for Yahoo! maps and directions. We apologize for the images of death on their main website so be forewarned, there's chicken period and carcass'.

Well, where do we begin? We went to Denny's about a year ago and was pleasantly surprised to find they had a vegan veggie burger that tasted pretty darn good! Upon our most recent visit, we learned that their veggie burger now includes cheese chunks. Bastards! Ruin a good thing! Anyway, during our ordering dilemma, we explained to the waiter that we were vegan, which meant that we did not consume any meat or dairy products. He assured us that the veggie burger now had cheese. We asked what other options they had, and we received the standard answer, "Salad." Meh. Fine, we were here. Whatever. Salad it was.

Jim ordered a side of hash browns, which he totally dug.

Imagine the horror, when what to our wondering eyes would appear, but a bowl of iceberg lettuce, lovely greens and veggies, topped with what?? You guessed it.. cheese. No shit! We are not kidding. After pointing the cheese out to the waiter, and reminding him that the cheese was the reason that we didn't order the veggie burger, he kind of went Doh!, and asked us if we wanted new ones. After watching the movie, "Waiting", and having both previously worked in the food industry, we feared spit and decided to pick out the hundred or so bits of disgusting lactate. Had they managed to leave the cheese off of it, it still wouldn't have been very interesting.

There were no other items on the menu that were vegan friendly. We can't recall the price of the meal as it totally wasn't worth it, even if it was a nickle!

Quality of Food:
Hashbrowns: Stellar!
Salad: Sucks!
Willingness to Accomodate: Sucks!
Overall Experience: Sucks!
